Both the girls’ and the boys’ hockey teams saw league action this week. The girls beat Mercy Convent 4-0 and never looked in much trouble despite being ahead only by one goal at half time. Goals came from Julia (2), Nicole and Poppy, with Ella as usual steering the team’s effort from Centre-Half. This was Iona’s second clean-sheet in goal. The boys meanwhile defeated St Mark’s School 2-0, both goals being scored by Hugh. It was a very pleasing performance for a first match. George led his team ably from Centre-Half, with Patrick dominating the opposition in defence, Akin always…

Julia scored a hat-trick: she had a great knack of being in the right place at the right time. Poppy and Nicole put plenty of pressure on the opposition goalie, with Poppy rewarded for her efforts with a well-taken goal. The entire team played very well indeed. DSD

Rugby season off and running

Headfort 25 Maidwell Hall 25 The opening match of the season saw the visit of Maidwell Hall from England. It was a do-or die-encounter for both teams, and it showed from the opening whistle. Maidwell piled on the pressure and opened the scoring with a well worked try. This early lead was wiped out almost immediately by a breakaway try from centre and captain Patrick L. The pack contested well and provided an ample supply of ball for the backs to work with. The last quarter of the match proved crucial – as our pack ran out of energy, gaps…

Girls’ Hockey Match

By | Sport

DSD, Oct 2016 The girls’ team had its first outing this week against Cavan Royal School at home. It was a fabulous match — plenty of end-to-end action, good skills and three goals. Alas, Cavan scored two of the goals (one with the last hit of the match) so we lost 2-1. But despite the agony of losing in that fashion, there is a lot to be pleased about. Our girls played very well indeed, especially considering many of them are new to the game. Iona C made many good saves in goal, Scarlett O’D was a stalwart at the…
