Riders Visit to Wicklow Polo School

By | News, Sport

On Wednesday, Headfort riders from the top 3 forms had a special visit to Wicklow Polo School (by kind permission of international polo player, Siobhan Herbst) accompanied by Headfort’s riding instructor Vicki Browne and Headfort parent Catherine Rothwell. After having their picnic lunch in the club house overlooking the all weather pitch, the riders were treated to a demonstration match or chukka with commentator Wendy Herbst explaining the game. They were then split into 3 teams with 2 teams playing each other on foot and the third team had polo practice on the wooden horse. Most of the children also had the wonderful opportunity to ride…

The WILD. Trip to Connemara

By | News, Sport

This was our first trip beyond Meath and was made possible by the generosity of Catherine Rothwell (Otto’s Hurley’s Mum in Upper VI) and David Wilkinson. The pictures of snow-capped peaks, and children hiking, climbing, running and even swimming will tell the story better than I can but I think it’s appropriate to add that the children who participated did so with huge enthusiasm. Barely a murmur of complaint was heard even when there were miles to go and hail and sleet were barring our way. No sooner had we arrived on Friday than we were out on the dunes…

This Friday, Mr Archer and Ms Rutto will lead their intrepid bunch of Explore Meath trekkers west to Connemara for a full weekend of serious walking. They will be staying in a wonderful cottage (by kind permission of David Wilkinson) in Slyne Head.  They will be in the capable hands of  “WILD” who specialise in Expedition Training, Guided Hillwalking, Rock Climbing and Mountain Skills Training Courses. Meticulously planned extra curricular activities are in the capable hands of Otto’s mum, Catherine Rothwell. On Friday afternoon they will undertake a looped walk on the Derroura mountain bike trail, outside Oughterard towards Clifden….

The rain has stopped – for now – and there are days when spring gives us more than a hint that it is in the air. Some rhododendrons are blooming, and the magnolia look set to follow – a sign of the sheer beauty that is Headfort in the springtime! The hockey teams have been busy: the girls have been beaten just once (1-0 by “scary Skerries”!); the mixed team is unbeaten so far; and two mixed teams of younger players had a wonderful day in Belfast this past Monday playing against the Inchmarlo boys – honours were almost even…

The girls had a good win today in the Meath League against Wilson’s Hospital. We won 8-0, and goals were scored by Alejandra (4), Eile (2), the captain Abby and Aude. Even though the match was one-sided, it was played in good cheer — and our girls knew that the other team were at quite a disadvantage playing on our grass! Alejandra was the second to score a hat-trick this season for the girls’ team (Isabelle being the first); and Sophia has scored a hat-trick for the (mixed) First XI. Well done to all of them. The team has played…

Headfort News

We are just over halfway through the optimistically-labeled ‘Spring’ term. The children of Upper and Lower VI will have mock Common Entrance exams after our St. Patrick’s Day exeat, and this is concentrating their minds on their work — though I am often struck that Headfort children are very well motivated in any case, with or without exams on which to focus. Our hockey pitches have been well and truly sodden, but that hasn’t stopped both the Girls’ team and the Mixed First XI from achieving some notable success, mainly away from home. Currently both teams are at or very…
